I know that breakfast is important, but I also know that being realistic, I just can’t get up early enough to have a real breakfast. So I started looking for replacements, so that I wasn’t missing such an important meal, but yet didn’t have to waste any time. I found breakfast shakes, and I have three I’ve been trying to share with you. The first one I really enjoyed is the Special K Protein Shake. I really like all the flavors. I will admit – the first time I drank it I was pretty turned off by the taste. Second time around though it was yummy – so it just caught me off guard the first time.

I have tried their other products before – and was not really too impressed. Aside from their snack bars, I never really bothered much with anything else they had to offer.
Kellogg’s shakes have 190 calories, 5 grams of fat, 29g carbs and 10 protein. That was really nice – it was only 3 WW points, but I found myself still getting hungry pretty early before lunch. So I started supplementing with a banana or something else, and that would help – but not a lot.
So I started to ask around and get ideas for drinks with a bit more protein to last a bit longer in the morning. I was told to try Muscle Milk and Myoplex. I looked at both of these (quite a bit more pricey than the Special K drinks, by the way!) and the fat on these were outrageous. So I noticed they made a muscle milk light, and a myoplex lite as well.
The Muscle Milk Light 100 Calorie is delicious!

It has no sugar added, is lactose free and has 15 grams of protein and low carbs, so it gives a little extra boost. I only tried the chocolate, and was really impressed with it. It’s small, just 8 ounces, but I for a 100 calorie drink, I was able to drink just that – and not have any hunger until lunch, where I didn’t inhale because I was starving. So CytoSport’s Muscle Milk light gets two thumbs up, for sure! I’m sure the non ‘light’ version would be tasty, but the fat was just too much for me to justify when I’m not looking for some of the same benefits some other people who drink it are. I’m just looking for a higher protein alternative to start the day off!

And finally – EAS Myoplex Lite has the highest amount of protein, at 20 grams, has 170 calories and unfortunately, a good hunk of carbs at 20 grams. I tried the Chocolate Fudge, and personally – it fell flat. I just wasn’t impressed at all, and for the calories and carbs that it has, the 5 extra grams of protein aren’t worth it.
My final vote – Muscle Milk Light. If it’s not enough, or I’m feeling a little extra hungry, because it’s only 100 calories, that leaves me room for some yogurt and fruit, which makes for an awesome start to the day!
