My husband sent me this the other day… It shows how drastically things have changed over the generations.
These are retro ads, you can find them here at RetroComedy.
First things first – Lane Bryant sold clothes to girls and teens? Drastic change of pace it’s taken. Not to mention I like how the ad says Everything is priced the same as “regular” priced clothes, Lane Bryant is NOT competitively priced anymore. Express and Limited are the “regular” stores that I would at some points compare their clothing to, and their clothes are now significantly less expensive most of the time – so it’s interesting that something like that was their selling point.
The girl in the picture is chubby? Wow, then I can’t imagine what ‘polite’ terminology they’d use for us now.
It’s interesting to see how things change with our generations, however this is just depressing…. I wonder if we’re slowly slipping back into some of that mindset… We’re calling size 10 celebrities fat, we’re getting rid of the “plus” size clothes on well known brands, we’re moving a lot of plus size stores out of malls and into their own stores.
Obviously I’m not saying we should all stay overweight and “show the man” whose boss, because our goal here is overall wellness, but that includes looking good. When you look good, you feel good. When you feel good about yourself – you take care of yourself. It’s a positive cycle (or should be).
Just some food for thought. ![]()

Wow… It is interesting how drastically things have changed… Size 10, chubbie? I’ll knock down anyone who calls me that now!
lol – hilarious ad, but I agree with Nicole, not a fan of the term ‘chubbies’
Happy SITS Saturday Sharefest!
Wow… “Chubbies?” I don’t know what to say.
I had no idea Layne Bryant has been around that long and that their interests or market has always been for more than size 2. Somethings never change while at the same time, times have changed! Wow!
When I was a kid it was called “pretty plus” for little girls. I agree feeling good makes a world of difference for a human…physically and mentally.
Happy Saturday Sharefest!
Hi!
I think this is interesting and a little bit sad too…
I’ll have to come back and check out your blog – looks like you have a lot to share!
You might enjoy my post on Sweeter LIVING today (about the very SKINNY italian babe that threw me out of the shoe store…) Come on over;)
Happy Saturday Sharefest!
I was also a “pretty plus”. Hated it. But I’ve always been a little bigger than the other girls. Now I come to realize that I was actually a very good size and shape at 5′9″. And size 10 is the smallest I’ve ever been. I once fit into an 8 with camel toe, does that count?
